Why Bus when You Can Drive?

Tuesday, 1 March 2011

There is a wide range of vehicles available through cheap car hire services, which allow people to enjoy the freedom to go wherever they want whenever they feel like it. While taking a bus has a number of advantages, foremost being cost, it comes with limitations that make the transport mode not particularly suited to the intrepid traveller.

One of the advantages of hiring a car is that people can go off the beaten track and discover things and places that those on a bus may not be able to as they may not be on their itinerary. There is a wide variety of places across the UK that are worth checking out at leisure and each one of them has got something unique to bring to the table.

Before choosing to hire a car, it is important to have an idea about what sort of area or terrain is to be explored, as this is vital to ensuring the best car for the job is chosen. For instance, those going for some scenic country driving during the summer could opt for an open top saloon, which would be the wrong choice for people exploring mountain passes and hilly places when the weather is not so amenable.

Those keen on enjoying a summer excursion in the UK may want to consider hiring a car for a tour of the West Country, which is home to charming villages and port towns boasting a rich history. South Devon is particularly worth driving through as it is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which is home to one of Britain's finest landscapes. People driving through the region can look forward to enjoying breathtaking views informed by rugged cliffs, sandy coves and a peaceful countryside.

Visitors will probably find it difficult to restrict themselves to just South Devon as the entire county, along with its neighbour Cornwall, have many areas protected as AONB. Both are home to some of the most charming properties in the country, many of which have pride of place in a number of UK and Hollywood films featuring some of the biggest names in the industry.

One such attraction is the National Trust-managed property known as Antony, which was used as the set of the Walt Disney film Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. Located in Torpoint, Cornwall, the enchanting early 18th-century mansion contains fine collections of paintings, furniture and textiles and has been home to the Carew Pole family for hundreds of years. Visitors to the beautiful estate can not only explore its formal gardens boasting modern sculptures and the National Collection of Daylilies, but also see rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and camellias in the Woodland Garden.

Not very far away from the estate is Cotehele, a Tudor house located in St Dominick, near Saltash, which boasts many stories and legends. According to the National Trust, which manages the property, visitors to the attraction can expect a magical experience where little has changed over the years. This should be enough to appeal to those using car hire services.
