Wednesday, 21 December 2011
With a number of Christmas traditions still in circulation after numerous years, the winter season offers families the chance to enjoy time together - especially in the kitchen. Food preparation and cooking is a vital part of the holiday and the success of celebrations is generally measured on the quality of food and presents by children and adults alike.
Cooking at Christmas is important for a number of reasons. Not only does it offer people the chance to create some fantastic dishes from festive Christmas recipes but it also provides an activity for families to share together. Regardless of whether you are making a gingerbread house or the traditional Christmas pudding, the festive season is a great time to get in the kitchen with family and make some seasonal treats.
Bring the family together
As stated above, one of the main reasons why cooking is important over Christmas is because it brings the whole family together. A number of seasonal recipes are easy to make and can therefore be enjoyed created and enjoyed by all of your guests, meaning that everyone can get involved and feel like they are part of Christmas.
Of course, family bonding doesn't just have to occur over seasonal recipes and even pasta recipes can be a great thing for families to make together with the leftover turkey.
Show your love and appreciation
Christmas baking and cooking is also important because it allows you to show your love and appreciation for friends and family. Biscuits and other seasonal treats such as mince pies make a great gift, and homemade versions will always be more popular than shop bought versions. Wrapping these items in decorative paper and boxes is a great way to make this special gift even more unique and personalised.
Make the most of ingredients at hand
The other great thing about cooking at Christmas is that there are a range of dishes which you can create, many of which will use a number of ingredients already at your disposal. This means that you don't have to buy lots of ingredients to make fantastic dishes and can therefore make the most of what you already have to hand.
Update existing recipes
Of course, Christmas dishes don't just have to be seasonal meals but can be updated versions of your favourite dishes. One of the easiest ways to improve existing recipes is through the addition of herbs and spices and there are a number of great seasonal favourites available. Schwartz are just one company that sell these items pre-packaged, giving you an affordable and easy way to customise and alter existing recipes.
Updating recipes can be done for both main meals and desert recipes, meaning that your entire menu can have an overhaul at Christmas. Popular deserts such as cheesecakes and gāteau can still be enjoyed during Christmas and simply using festive fruits and ingredients such as nutmeg and cinnamon can help you to make these dishes more Christmas orientated.
Other popular items, such as Swiss rolls, can also be given the Christmas touch through a few simple adjustments. Making a chocolate sponge for the main cake and covering it with chocolate butter-cream will allow you to create a festive Yule log. Icing decorations can then be added in other colours and styles to add extra flavour.
Melting chocolate and cutting out small holly shaped pieces is a great way to make this popular dish festive. Dusting the entire cake with icing sugar can also give it a snowy appearance and therefore make it a festive treat that anyone is sure to enjoy.
