OMAGH-born teacher and proprietor of Learning SPACE, the Belfast and online based educational store, Lorraine McAleer, says it is delighted to have been awarded best new start at the fifth annual Belfast Awards in the Waterfront Hall.
Nearly 500 guests attend the gala evening, which saw entrepreneurship receive its just rewards.
Originally from the Hospital Road area of Omagh, Lorraine has always been motivated by a passionate interest in education, and took a leap of faith with this innovative enterprise.
A qualified primary school teacher, Lorraine was exasperated by the lack of strong educational resources, and so was driven to create her very own Learning SPACE.
They stock a wide range of products to support the specific educational needs of all children, of all abilities, in order to help them reach their full potential.
Speaking after the event Lorraine said: "I am delighted to win this award at the end of a great first year for Learning SPACE. We have found a real demand for our products and services, particularly with children with a specific learning need and we are now looking to expand throughout NI and develop our online store. Thanks to the Belfast Awards for a great evening and congratulations to all the award winners"
Lorraine McAleer and her sister, Mary, received their award from Belfast city councillor, Michael Browne. They were also highly commended for Excellence in Entrepreneurship.
This year's awards ceremony reached out to sectors across Belfast and recognised achievement in business, education, arts, technology, hospitality and contribution to the city, with 18 winners receiving a limited edition 'Nuala' - a scaled-down statuette of the Lagan Lady crafted by its original designer Andy Scott.
Lord Mayor, councillor Tom Hartley, said Belfast City Council was delighted to play a role in recognising local champions: "Promoting community spirit, excellence and entrepreneurship within Belfast is a key priority throughout my term as First Citizen. I applaud this opportunity for us to shine the spotlight on all that is best about this great city and the wonderful people who set an example of good citizenship".
