Burglar flees into the night after being disturbed by occupant

Thursday, 5 January 2017

A NEWTOWNSTEWART woman has spoken of her 'frightening' encounter with a burglar who broke into her home in the early hours of Thursday last.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was awakened by the sound of the intruder - who she believes picked the lock of her front door at her home in the Mourne Lodge Crescent area - at approximately 3.10am.
Without hesitation, she quickly made her way down the stairs and caught a glimpse of the brazen man, before he fled through the front door and into the night.
He was wearing a dark top with a hat or hoody as well as dark Adidas tracksuit bottoms and police have asked anyone who has any information to contact them.
Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident and nothing was taken.
Speaking to the Tyrone Constitution, the woman - who lives with her husband and two-year-old son - said her family have been left "badly shaken up".
"I immediately got up when I heard a noise downstairs and then I saw a man standing in my hallway," she said. "I ran towards him but he fled out the door he came through. There wasn't anything taken as he wasn't in the house long enough.
"It was certainly a frightening experience and it's put a dampener on the festive celebrations. He must have picked the lock as there were no signs of forced entry.
"I was quite fortunate he ran off, he could have turned on me just as easily. It'll take a while to get over it."
Vigilant
Appealing to the community to be vigilant, the resident continued: "I know there have been a couple of other break-ins in the area over the last couple of months so it's important the neighbourhood is on its watch and ensure everything is locked up.
"I believe it could have been a local man responsible for the break-in. I don't think it was anything personal against our family. Our house probably wasn't the first property he tried to break into."
Posting on the PSNI Strabane Facebook page, a spokesperson said: "This morning at approximately 3am an unknown male was disturbed inside the hallway of a property in the Mourne Lodge Crescent area of Newtownstewart".
The spokesperson added that thankfully no one was hurt and the culprit fled into the night towards the town centre.
"We need your help to identify him. He is about 5 ft 10 , wearing dark Adidas tracksuit bottoms and had a dark top on with a hat or hoody. If you saw anyone close to this description or can assist enquiries in any way please call 101 and quote reference 156 29/12/16. Also please ensure to secure all properties, cars etc."
