Man stabbed in face and neck in Omagh assault

Thursday, 19 January 2017

DETECTIVES in Omagh are investigating a serious assault in the Riverview Park area, off the Hospital Road, in which a man, aged in his 20s, required hospital treatment for lacerations to his face and neck.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred at around 11pm on Thursday past, and was later released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Omagh town councillor, Chris Smyth, said the incident was "deeply worrying".

"We are lucky we aren't looking at a murder investigation," he added. "This sort of thing is not acceptable in any shape or form and has no place in Omagh, or anywhere else for that matter.

"Going forward, I hope the police can catch whoever has carried out this assault so that we don't see this kind of thing happening again. I would urge people with information to immediately come forward."

Errol Thompson, a fellow Omagh town councillor, also condemned the attack.

"As a council, we are doing our best for the Hospital Road and other areas of the town and no one needs this kind of anti-social behaviour.

"This was a late-night incident and I would ask anyone with any information at all to contact the PSNI.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the Riverview Park area of Omagh on Thursday night of last week and who may have witnessed the incident to contact them in Omagh on 101 quoting reference number 1248 12/01/17 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
