Local towns set to lose regular traffic wardens

Thursday, 2 February 2017

A number of towns in the locality could be set to lose regular patrols by traffic wardens.

Under a shake-up of current parking enforcement deployment across the province any town with fewer than ten tickets on average issued per month will be removed from the routine patrol schedule.

This may include Newtownstewart, Castlederg, Aughnacloy, Clogher, Dromore, Fivemiletown, Irvinestown and Kesh.

The review was announced last month by Roads Minister, Chris Hazzard, who said it will consider the effectiveness of deployment and the number of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs)/Warning Notices issued and the number of Vehicle Drive Aways (VDAs) recorded.

The changes have already been rolled out in Transport NI's southern division where seven towns have been removed from the schedule.

Attention will now turn to the other divisions in the province.

A look at the most recent annual figures on parking tickets issued shows that locally Castlederg (18), Newtownstewart (2), Aughnacloy (3), Clogher (76), Dromore (1), Fivemiletown (39), Irvinestown (72) and Kesh (1) could be set to lose routine patrolling under the review.

In announcing the review, the infrastructure minister said: "My priority as minister is to ensure the free flow of traffic in towns and cities across the north.

"In order to maximise effectiveness and efficiency, traffic attendants are deployed to those places where they will have the most impact upon road safety and traffic progression.

"Any town that was routinely enforced and generated less than 10 PCNs/VDAs on average per month, will be removed from the schedule for routine traffic attendant deployment."

Mr Hazzard confirmed the department will continue to visit all towns, including those removed from regular deployment, when need arises or when requested and resources are available.
