Battling Billy returns home from US after treatment plan secured in Dublin

Thursday, 18 May 2017

YOUNG Billy Caldwell, from Castlederg, has received the welcome news that he will be able to avail of treatment for his severe epilepsy at home in Ireland.

Just a week after flying out to Los Angeles for further scans, the local boy and his mum, Charlotte, flew home on Thursday last after the news that Billy's medical team in the US had managed to track down a doctor based in Dublin who will be taking over Billy's care plan.

This latest development means that the EEG and MRI scans that Billy is still awaiting will be carried out in Dublin as will his pending surgery.

Explaining the process, his 'delighted' mum said: "Billy needs another EEG and MRI brain scan and Dr Nordli (Billy's doctor in LA) understands the cost of it. Some of his team had been working away behind the scenes and they found a doctor in Dublin who is willing to take over Billy's care.

"Billy will have his scans in the south and the surgery will be done in the south as well because this doctor works with a really good neurosurgeon who can perform the surgery that Billy needs."

Relieved to finally be able to bring her son home indefinitely, Charlotte added: "I'm delighted. I can't think of the words to express how I feel. We were able to fly home on Thursday to our own house, to our own beds and we can stay in our own country and just drive down to Dublin which is amazing. It's just fantastic.

"I would like to thank everyone who has helped and donated to Billy's fund. He wouldn't be here without the generosity of the public and all the messages of support kept me going. We appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts. Billy is still here, he's still alive and it's an amazing feeling that he's going to be treated here."
