2 Castles boxers seal remarkable success thumbnailCealan Doherty and Danny McHugh, boxers with 2 Castles, won gold at the National Cadet Championships.

2 Castles ABC, Newtowstewart, had two boxers competing at the National Cadet Championships over the last few weeks. In these Championships the boxers compete for a place at the Junior European Championships in Romania in July in all weights, from 46kg upwards.

Boxing at 31kg Omagh boy, Cealan Doherty, at only 12 years of age, was thought good enough by the club to enter these Championships. Cealan has worked and trained tirelessly and this has certainly paid off as he came through to the final against reigning Irish champion, John Donohue, from Kildare. Donohue, from the Athy Club, would have been fancied to win but young Doherty had other ideas.

Boxing intelligently, Cealan was very composed throughout and even though he was adjudged to have lost the first round, he did not panic and changed his tactics slightly for the next two rounds, catching Donohue repeatedly with strong right crosses and left hooks. These second two rounds ensured that Cealan would be crowned champion and he emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins on a 3 to 2 split decision. Had there been an award for best technical boxer young, Doherty would have been thereabouts.

Boxing at 62kg, one of the European Championship weights, Danny McHugh, showed the selectors that he is more than capable of representing his country at these Championships.

Danny had two difficult opponents to overcome to even reach the final but this boy is really maturing. In his semi final, Danny had to beat the reigning Irish champion, Joshua Olaniyan, from Dublin. Olaniyan entered the ring as strong favourite as he had never lost a bout and certainly was extremely tall with a very awkward southpaw style. However, Danny was much faster to the punch and used good defence when necessary to easily outpoint his Dublin opponent and advance to the final against Munster boxer, Brian O'Donovan.

Having overcome the favourite in the semis, McHugh kept well focused, proving much too strong for O'Donovan to win the final. Danny will now go into strict training for the Europeans in Romania next month.

In action for the 2 Castles over the weekend on International duty in Leeds against England were Aghyaran girl, Louise McSorley, and Emma Killoran, the Club's new recruit from the Bishop Kelly Club where she certainly learned her trade well.

Louise won her International bout against English boxer, Ellie Tennyson, on a split 3 to 2 decision but Emma's bout was called off as her opponent weighed in overweight.

In total, the 2 Castles Club's superb run of success now includes six Irish National Champions during the 2016/17 season.

The winners were Cealan Doherty, Danny McHugh, Tiyrnn Mullan, Alannah Mayse, Jude Gallagher and Tiarnan Mayse. On top of that it had two silver medal winners: Ryan Donnelly and Aidan McSorey.
