Thursday, 13 July 2017

A PEDESTRIAN who sustained serious injuries in a hit-and-run road traffic collision involving a quad in Omagh on Friday past is in a stable condition.

Johnny Devlin, who is believed to be in his 60s, was struck as he walked close to his home on the Erganagh Road at around 10.45pm.

Police are appealing for witnesses who encountered any suspicious activity in the area at the time, particularly regarding the movements of two quad motorbikes, to come forward.

West Tyrone MLA., Declan McAleer, said the community "is in shock" following the incident.

"The community is very shocked that this has happened, and are equally as shocked that the man was just left there after he was knocked down. It has caused a great deal of concern in the area.

"I would encourage anyone with any information to contact the PSNI. I would also call on the people responsible to come forward. Also, anyone who drive recklessly on quads should stop this immediately. A couple of years ago, in west Belfast, a young mother was killed after being struck by a scrambler."

Inspector Glen Latimer said: "Police attended the scene at approximately 10.45pm. The man had sustained serious head injuries and was receiving treatment from ambulance staff at the scene before being taken to hospital.

"I am appealing to anyone that may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area at the time particularly regarding the movements of two quad motorbikes to contact Omagh Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1438 of 07/07/17. Or, alternatively if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
