Petition set up to over street lighting concerns at Beragh 'park and ride' facility thumbnailA petition has been created to install lighting at Crawford's Bridge 'park and ride' on the A5, close to Beragh.

A PETITION has been set up to have lights installed at the Crawford's Bridge 'park and ride' facility on the A5 road, close to Beragh.

The facility is well used by travellers in the district, particularly by those in the Sixmilecross, Beragh and Carrickmore areas. However, as winter approaches, Mid Tyrone councillor, Bert Wilson, claims that many people are having second thoughts of availing of it, due to the fact there is no lighting in the area.

The petition - which to-date has been signed by over 30 people, reads: "It is a serious issue in the winter months when passengers are getting off the bus on the opposite side of the road from the car park. Then passengers have to cross a busy road in complete darkness. Also, should anyone need to be picked up on the opposite side of the 'park and ride', there is no space for a vehicle to pull in safely. Lighting needs to be placed on both sides of the road at Crawford's Bridge park and ride."

The petition has been received by Mr Wilson who intends to pass it onto TransportNI. However, in a statement to this newspaper, a spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure said it had no plans to install lighting at the facility.

"Street lighting is only provided at park and ride facilities where the adjacent road network is also lit," a spokesperson said. "There are currently no plans to provide street lighting at this location as the road has limited development and there is no significant record of after dark accidents. The Department for Infrastructure will keep this position under review."

The response has angered Mr Wilson who feels the Department needs to be pro-active regarding this issue.

"I would ask, is the Department happy to wait until there is a fatality?," he questioned. "People from Sixmilecross, Beragh, Carrickmore, particularly the elderly and children who avail of the bus stop, are really concerned about the lack of lighting at this much used facility.

"Coming into the winter time, when we're faced with long and dark evenings, it becomes ever more dangerous. With muggings and people being attacked on the increase, it is extremely worrying that people have to sit in the dark while they await collection. There is also a possibility someone may be struck down while crossing the road. It isn't good enough and it's an issue TransportNI needs to address as soon as possible.

"Most park and ride facilities in the countries are lit up, but this one appears to be neglected and it is an ongoing issue over the last number of years.

"The fact that 31 people have signed the petition to have lights installed shows just how important this issue is to the local people."

He continued: "I would also ask for a right-hand turning bay to go into Beragh on the A5. There is a fair amount of traffic going into the village and Sixmilecross from the A5, and this is an issue I have been lobbying about for some time."
