A5 progress welcomed but Omagh-Ballygawley phase now a priority Buchanan.

West Tyrone DUP MLA., Tom Buchanan, has welcomed yesterday's announcement that construction on a phase of the A5 project between Strabane and New Buildings is set to begin early in 2018, but stressed the need for the development of the Omagh to Ballygawley phase was never greater.

He said the A5 had been a flagship project for the Executive dating back some time and now that the uncertainty had been removed by the Department of Infrastructure's decision to press ahead with vesting of the land on the New Buildings to Strabane section, this gave businesses and farmers all along the route some hope for the future.

"It was unhealthy for farmers who didn't know if they were going to lose land and unhealthy for businesses who can't expand, but now this move is a step in the right direction. "

He added the section between Omagh and Ballygawley was, in his opinion, the most important section of the A5.

"Omagh with its population and industry was the hub of the council area and it needed the A5 not only for traffic, but to allow the companies here to expand and enjoy certainty.

Many have been holding back on expansion due to the lack of progress with the A5, but this news will allow them plan ahead."
