Major gold mine plan is lodged. thumbnailThe site plan for Dalradian’s proposed gold mine.

Moves to establish a major gold mine and processing plant at Curraghinalt near Rouskey took a major step forward this week when Canadian company, Dalradian Resources Inc., announced it had submitted its planning application for the building of an underground mine and associated infrastructure.

It has claimed this would create at least 350 permanent direct jobs and is expected to give a one billion US dollars boost to the local economy over the 25-year life of the mine.

However local groups opposed to the development - Save Our Sperrins (SoS), Greencastle Community Voices and Communities Against Mining - have threatened they will make a formal complaint to the director of strategic planning at the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) regarding what they feel was an incomplete pre-consultation process surrounding the proposals.

They have also warned if this wasn't acted upon, they would pursue a legal route.

The Dalradian project has been immersed in controversy since its inception and has divided public opinion and indeed local communities on its viability and benefit to the area.

It currently supports more than 100 jobs at the exploration site at Curraghinalt, but the company has forecast both investment and job creation will flourish if their plans get the go-ahead.

The company also revealed this week it had also secured £46.3 million of financing from Orion Mine Finance Fund II LP and Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd, two of the top mine finance groups in the world.

Its chief executive, Patrick FN Anderson described the submission of the application to the Department for Infrastructure in Belfast as "an exciting day for Dalradian and for Northern Ireland."
