The Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) is delighted to support student midwives as they bring their skills to the Ekeendeni Missionary Hospital in Malawi.

Brenda McCabe, Western Trust team leader for midwives at the South West Acute Hospital and Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex, said: "As part of their midwifery training in the Western Trust with Queen's University Belfast, our student midwives Shauna McClelland from Omagh and Donna Walmsley from Lisnaskea were given the opportunity to undertake an elective placement abroad and chose to go to Ekeendeni Missionary Hospital in Malawi.

We are very proud of both Shauna and Donna and know that the experience they gained on their placement will carry with them throughout their career in midwifery."

Shauna and Donna explained: "We spent two weeks working in a variety of settings in the very rural outback with very basic conditions. We would provide care for up to 60 mothers and babies in the antenatal and postnatal clinics.

"In the labour ward our experience was very far removed to services we can provide at home in the South West Acute Hospital and Altnagelvin Hospital labour wards.

It was beyond our imagination the conditions under which these mothers and midwives were in to safely deliver their babies, with limited resources and medical equipment. The whole experience has provided us with an increased love for midwifery and helped us develop and enhance our basic skills, without the modern technology we are fortunate to have in the Western Trust.

"We are much more grateful for the services we have in the Western Trust and look forward when our training is completed to continue to work here."
