Abandoned and malnourished ‘Elsa’ left to battle bitterly cold winter conditions thumbnailElsa, who was found abandoned during last week's bitterly cold weather and was taken in by a kind foster home before giving birth to 10 pups over the weekend.

AS most of us curled up beside the fire for comfort and warmth during the coldest snap for some years, a heavily-pregnant stray dog was left to fend for herself after she was apparently dumped by her heartless owners.

Elsa, a lovable two-year-old cross-bred with a gentle temperament, was discovered wandering the streets in terrible wintry conditions on the outskirts of Omagh - badly malnourished and heavily pregnant.

The dog hadn't any collar, hadn't been chipped or been spayed and the hard-working team at Grovehill Animal Shelter, Sixmilecross, were contacted by the council dog warden to see if they could help.

They contacted regular foster carer, Violet Dennehy, who kindly agreed to look after Elsa and in the early hours of Saturday morning that same dog remarkably gave birth to 10 healthy pups.

"Weak and let down by humans when at her most vulnerable, this poor gentle creature found refuge in the care of Grovehill," explained Richard Robinson, co-ordinator of Grovehill Animal Shelter.
