Derry runners take top honours at Beragh 5. thumbnail Beragh 5 mile female winner, Marina Murphy of Derry Track Club, crosses the line.

IT was a Derry one, two and three finish at Beragh on Saturday as runners from the Maiden City made up the podium for the popular Tyrone race.

City of Derry Spartans runner Declan Reed produced the second fastest ever finish in the five mile event, thundering through the Mid Tyrone course in 25:20. Although it was still 30 seconds behind Kenyan athlete Vincent Kiprotich's course record of 25:51, set in 2014. Derry Track Club athlete Conan McCaughey was second (25:58), followed by Spartans runner Kyle Doherty (26:49).

Marina Murphy of Derry Track Club was the fastest woman in the five mile course, finishing in 30:53, just ahead of Grace Carson of Mid Ulster AC and Pauline McGurren of Sperrin Harriers.

Local runners took the top honours in the 5K race, which was won by Matthew Neil of Omagh Harriers in 16:37 with Jack Moore and Michael Kerr of Carmen Runners making up the podium.

Cassie Lagan of Omagh Harriers was the fastest female in the 5K, followed by Sarah Broderick (Carmen Runners) and Kelly McCaffery. The full results from both runs are available on the Beragh 5 Facebook page.

The Beragh 5 Committee 2018 would once again like to thank all the athletes who participated in the Beragh 5 mile and 5K run today from the local community, local running groups and those who travelled from further afield and of course our own C25K athletes. For without you today would not have been a success.

The presence of Stephen Thompson from the Motor Neurone Disease Association was also appreciated a very worthy charity supported by the Beragh 5 2018.

And although Beragh 5 2018 was a success it would not be so without the support of our local community providing the food; to Niall and the ladies serving the post race refreshments; the help preparing the Pavilion; the volunteers helping at registration, on the line, parking, marshalling, to PD Coaches for the shuttle service; to Conor and Oliver McCullagh for their efficient and professional management of the run; Cathal for providing the music; photographers out on the course, the PSNI and the use of the chapel carparks.

"We have really enjoyed the Beragh 5 2018 thank you for sharing it with us and hope to see you again in 2019."
