HUNDREDS of runners and walkers descended on Eskra on Friday evening for the first race in the inaugural Paul Murray 5k Grand Prix Series.
The race series was organised in memory of Paul Murray, a member of Knockmany Running Club. The participants were faced with a challenging undulating 5k route in warm conditions which swept though the scenic Eskra countryside.
In a very competitive race first home was Darrell McKee (Acorns AC) in a time of 16.23 followed closely by local athlete Paul Barbour in a time of 16.27. Brian Taggart (Sperrin Harriers) crossed the line in third place in a time of 16.36.
First female over the line was Paula Donnelly in an excellent time of 19.16 followed by local athlete Grainne O'Hagan (Knockmany Running Club) in a time of 19.26 and completing the podium in third place was Michelle Donnelly (DTC) with a time of 19.58. Also excellent performances from Tristan Kelly (Carmen Runners) and Katie Ritchie (Knockmany Running Club) who won the U18 Categories. Winners of the U12 categories were Finn Kelly (Knockmany Running Club) and Cara Kerlin.
The organisers Knockmany Running Club were delighted with the large turnout of participants from near and far who supported the first race despite the adverse weather earlier in the day. The Paul Murray 5K Grand Prix Series are raising funds for the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland charity. Paul needed use of an air ambulance so in his memory will be raising funds for this very worthy charity.
The organisers would like to thank all who contributed to the success of the first race. Participants were grateful of refreshments served in Eskra Community Centre after the race. The series continues at 7.30pm over the next three Friday's June 15, 22 and 22 June on different routes. Registration is from 6-7pm in Eskra Community Centre. Entry Fee for individual race is 7.
