The finale to the Paul Murray 5k Grand Prix Series took place on Friday evening in Eskra. This new exciting addition to the local road running circuit was organised by Knockmany Running Club in memory of club member Paul Murray.
The Series has attracted a combined total of almost one thousand runners and walkers over the four nights taking on different routes. On Friday night the Series reached a conclusion with around 250 participants braving the heat wave conditions to take on the final race.
On the night the winner was the ever-consistent local runner Paul Barbour who pulled clear of the field to finish in impressive time of 16.45, in second place was Adrian Scullion (Knockmany Running Club) in a time of 17.33 and closely followed by Micheal Kerr (Carmen Runners) in a time of 17.45 who finished third. As in the previous race the first female across the line was Grainne O'Hagan (Knockmany Running Club) breaking 19 minutes in superb time of 18.52, Paula Donnelly was a close second in a time of 19.20 and in third place was Maria Donnelly (St Macartans) in a time of 22.49.
Completing the Series clean sweep in the U18 Category was the impressive young runner Tristan Kelly (Carmen Runners) who finished in a time of 18.35. Whilst Katie Ritchie (Knockmany Running Club) won the Under 18 Female with a time of 26.18. The Under 12 Categories were won by Sean Hagan (Omagh Harriers) and Aoibheann Shevlin (Knockmany Running Club).
The Overall Grand Prix Winners were decided at the final race with the fastest three cumulative times over the race series determining the male and female winners. Paul Barbour was the first male in the series with the fastest cumulative time of 49.49 over three races. Grainne O'Hagan (Knockmany Running Club) claimed the overall female series prize with cumulative time of 57.07. Both winners were presented with special Paul Murray 5k Grand Prix wood engraved trophies.
The other category winners were Stevie McKenna (Knockmany Running Club) Male O40, John McGrath (Knockmany Running Club) Male O50 and Tommy Gartland (Knockmany Running Club) Male O60. Elaine Collins Female O40, Patricia Campbell (Omagh Harriers) Female O50 and Geraldine McCarron Female O60.
The organisers of Knockmany Running Club would like to thank all who contributed to the success of the inaugural Paul Murray Race Series and all participants who supported the event over the four weeks.
The Paul Murray 5k Grand Prix is raising funds for the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland charity. Paul needed use of an Air Ambulance so in his memory proceeds from the event will be given to this very worthy charity. The organisers hope to draw on the success of this year's series so the event becomes an annual fixture in the road racing calendar.
