Pedalled to the medal! Irvine wins Tour of Omagh thumbnail

David Irvine, of Team Caldwell, was celebrating a fantastic achievement on Sunday after taking the overall victory at the Tour of Omagh.
After two fascinating days of racing, it all boiled down to an enthralling last-day spectacle in the A4 race. Up to 25 riders were within 30 seconds of the overall lead and so it was all to play for. After the second KOH of the day, the first dangerous attack came from Damian O'Hagan (Clogher Valley Wheelers), who opened up almost 30 seconds of a gap in a solo effort. However, he suffered for his efforts as the race went deeper into the Sperrins and on the final Category 1 climb at Gortin, the KOH leader Irvine stamped his mark on the race, and by the top had over 40 seconds on a chasing group of 10 riders. The yellow jersey at this point had lost almost two minutes.
The chasing group would make the connection to Irvine, and it came to a sprint at the finish with Clogher Valley rider Tomas Knapcock taking the stage win. Irvine though would take the overall win for the event, and he also extended his lead in the KOH competition sponsored by Capital Reinforcing.
Irvine had set down the ground work for his overall victory by finishing safely in the bunch on Stage one on Friday, followed up by second-place in the Stage two TT on Saturday morning.
Rodgers took the overall points competition, and Shane Murray (Oldcastle CC) took the Best Young rider competition. Harps CC also took the Best Overall Team competition. Declan McEntee (Emyvale CC) was the Best Unplaced Master.
In the Women's event, Ellie McArdle (Cycling Ulster), Lyndsay Bryce (Leinster) and Ciara Ni Fhlathartaigh (Orwell) were determined to make it a hard chase for the scratch group and with almost four minutes of an advantage approaching Drumquin it looked to be playing dividend as the scratch group was being carefully contained by the TC Riders protecting the pink jersey.
