Highly-rated young Newtownstewart boxer, Jude Gallagher, claimed an amazing ninth Irish title at the weekend when he defeated Monivea's Adam Hession in a high-quality final to claim the Under 18 accolade at the National Stadium in Dublin.
The victory sets the Sacred Heart College, Omagh, pupil up perfectly for the World Youth Championships in Budapest in Hungry in September.
Emerging a 4-1 split-decision winner over the Galway fighter, Gallagher conceded it was a "tough fight".
The 2Castles talented sportsman added: "I felt I did enough but it was tight. It was high-paced but I need to keep that up. That's why I need to be boxing going to the Worlds."
It is the second time this year Jude has tasted success in the Irish U18 Championship finals, having came up trumps back in January.
In April, Jude was awarded a bronze medal after losing in the semi-finals of the European Youth Championships in Italy.
Jude is one of only five fighters from the eleven-strong World Championships squad that entered the Irish Championships. Thankfully he came out unscathed and the event proved a significant confidence boost. He also won at the Monkstown Box Cup at the start of July.
"I'm keeping the fitness up and ticking over. I entered to stay busy and keep active. I need as many fights as I can coming up to the Worlds.
"I'm just back from a training camp in Jordanstown, I've been keeping fit and working on the technical side of my boxing. I've three camps coming up before the Worlds. I'm very fit and I'm going to be going to the Worlds very strong. I know what I'm capable of. I can fight with the best.
"I want to go to the Worlds and I want to be a World champion, I'm able to mix with the best."
Jude was welcomed back to Newtownstewart by his club mates, friends and family to celebrate his achievement with an informal 'homecoming' party at the Castle Hotel on Sunday evening.
