DERGVIEW FC's hopes of a second meeting of the season with Premiership side, Ballymena United, were dashed on Saturday as Amateur League outfit, Derriaghy, ousted them from the JJB Sports Irish Cup.
A second half strike by Aaron Baker proved to be the difference between the sides in this fifth round clash at Darragh Park.
The Championship One outfit had not played on home soil since the Irn Bru Cup quarter-final defeat to Ballymena on November 16, but it's Derriaghy who are now dreaming of causing a major shock after they were paired with the Braidmen in the sixth round draw, following this slender victory.
The Amateur League side arrived at the Castlederg venue with quite a reputation, having won all 11 of their league games to date. They, too, boasted in their ranks a number of players with Irish League experience, including speedy front man Baker who swooped with the killer goal on 75 minutes.
After an evenly contested first half, it was the Championship One side who upped the ante on the resumption, but after Ryan Campbell hit a post from two yards out and visiting goalkeeper, John Rosbotham, acrobatically tipped over another headed effort by the ace marksman, the visitors struck with devastating effect on the counter-attack.
Derriaghy swiftly moved the ball down the left and when raiding fullback Niall Burke floated a pinpoint delivery to the back post Baker, who has had spells at Dungannon Swifts and Portadown, showed his Premier class with a splendid first time volley.
Rallied late
Dergview rallied late on but failed to penetrate a resolute visiting defence that had performed magnificently throughout the course of the 90 minutes.
In terms of possession there was little to choose between the sides throughout although Dergview, albeit being far from at their attacking best, asked the bulk of the questions in the final third.
Three minutes in, livewire attacker Aaron Arkinson fizzed a shot inches wide of Rosbotham's right post from a Warner Mullen lay-off, before Arkinson swept in an inviting low cross, which Campbell failed by a whisker to connect with.
The visitors' first real effort came on 23 minutes when a stinging free-kick by Andrew Rosbotham was parried by home netminder, Stefan McCusker, before a defender completed the clearance.
Back at the other end spearhead Campbell turned and fired straight at visiting custodian Rosbotham, following a Walsh free kick, before the hitman had another strike on goal after being ushered down the right channel by Arkinson. But again his shot lacked any real venom.
Campbell's strike partner Warner Mullen, two minutes before the interval, was then presented with an excellent opportunity, following a sweeping attack involving skipper Garbh Gallagher, Liam McMenamin, Blaine Burns and overlapping right-back Gareth Porter but the striker, with his weaker left foot, curled the ball well wide.
Dergview went into the break slightly on top and the Championship outfit significantly upped the ante in the opening exchanges of the second period with Campbell somehow steering an inviting low right-sided cross from Nathan Cashel onto the base of Rosbotham's left upright from two yards.
A quick free kick by Walsh again had the visitors in retreat but after John Carlin had exchanged passes with Mullen, a visiting defender somehow cleared the overlapping fullback's shot. The Derriaghy rearguard was now coming under increasing scrutiny but in their hour of need goalkeeper Rosbotham rode to the rescue by tipping over a point-blank header from Campbell, in the wake of excellent work by Walsh and Arkinson on the right.
Moments later, Campbell had another effort charged down on the turn, after Walsh and Arkinson engineered yet another threatening attack.
It was becoming increasingly apparent that one goal would settle the tie and, having survived that period of rigorous examination, it was Derriaghy and that man Baker who provided the decisive moment.
The home side rallied late however the best they offered was a 25-yard first time volley by Campbell that Rosbotham dealt with comfortably.
Intermediate Cup
This coming Saturday, Dergview face another tough task with the visit of another Amateur League side, Newington YC, in the third round of the Intermediate Cup (kick-off 1.30pm). Harry McConkey's charges certainly won't be taking Newington lightly, after they ousted Glentoran from the Irish Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 win at the Oval.
