DERGVIEW FC deservedly sealed a place in the fourth round of the Intermediate Cup on Saturday with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over giant-killers, Newington YC., at a blustery and windswept Darragh Park.
Harry McConkey's men always looked the most likely to progress in a match which was dictated by the atrocious weather conditions, but the outcome remained firmly in the balance until substitute, Duwayne McManus, coolly slotted home the decisive penalty kick, after a scoreless draw in normal and extra-time.
The Belfast side, who had sensationally dumped Glentoran out of the JJB Sports Irish Cup a week previously, arrived at Darragh Park full of confidence, following their heroics at the Oval.
However, with Dergview having the strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Amateur League side offered little in the final third of the pitch. The hosts bossed the first period, but they also struggled to deal with the weather and the increasingly slippery pitch.
The teams traded openings in the first 10 minutes with Ryan Campbell shooting wide for Dergview and Michael Smith firing straight at Stefan McCusker for the visitors. Campbell went close again a short time later, latching onto a decisive pass from the industrious Nathan Cashel, but he was off target again, while Cashel was then beaten to a Gareth Porter throughball by visiting keeper, Dean Smyth.
Smyth then pulled off an excellent reflex save in the 26th minute to stop Garbh Gallagher's back post header from John Carlin's inswinging corner, and from a similar situation a minute later, Cashel headed over after beating Smyth to Carlin's delivery.
In the final 15 minutes of the first half, Dergview upped the pressure with Warner Mullen firing over, Campbell denied by Smyth and Cashel was unable to pick out Campbell, after rounding the visiting keeper.
The second half saw Newington, with the wind at their backs, come more into the game with Neil Quinn, who scored their winner against Glentoran, shooting straight at McCusker and inches over the top corner, before Eamon Lyndsey brought a smart save out of the home keeper and Cormac Brannigan fired over the rebound.
Aaron Walsh had arguably Dergview's best chance of the game in the 67th minute, but his shot from a Cashel cross sailed wastefully over the bar. And two minutes later, substitute, Andy Sproule cut inside his marker, but his left-footed effort from 18 yards was straight at Smyth.
Cashel was the next home player to go close, failing by inches to convert a Mullen cross from the left, while at the other end in the last minute, Smith shot straight at McCusker, following a swift Newington counter-attack, which left the game deadlocked at 0-0.
Extra-time came and went without much incident, but the penalty shoot-out got off to a great start for the home side with Michael Smyth blazing over. Dergview looked in complete control when Walsh and Mullen scored their first two spot kicks, but Patrick Pierce and Daniel Smith replied for the visitors, as Sproule and Adam Lecky both saw their efforts saved. With the shoot-out delicately poised, Peter Gilgunn and Sean McAuley both blazed over to allow McManus to calmly tuck home the winner.
