Pollock the master at Greencastle again thumbnailPaul Pollock crosses the line to win the Greencastle 5 mile road race.

THERE were no surprises that Olympian Paul Pollock lived up to the pre-race hype surrounding his attempt to make it three successive wins at the Greencastle 5 on Boxing Day.

Well over a thousand athletes turned out for the 31st annual running of the popular race.

Talented Northern Ireland and Ireland international Pollock looked a class act as he broke the tape in a swift 24:52, despite the windy conditions. The always impressive Paddy Hamilton (Slieve Gullion Runners) completed the course in 25:25 for second place, while Conan McCaughey crossed the line in 25:57 for third place.

Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry AC) ran out victorious in the ladies race after an excellent performance.  In what has been an exceptional year for the Spartan athlete, Catherine saw off the challenge of Olympian and AAI National Marathon medallist Catriona Jennings (Letterkenny AC) to secure top honours in 28:12. Catriona claimed second place in 28:56, before Cathy McCourt completed the top three in 30:32.
