Omagh Academy hockey draws to a close thumbnailOmagh Academy 1st XI champions.

OMAGH Academy's 2016-17 hockey season has concluded with all teams recently finishing their league fixtures.

The first XI made it to the semi-final of the Senior Shield, following a 4-0 win against Larne Grammar in the quarter-final.

Ballymena Academy were the opposition and despite two losses to them already this year, Heather Moffitt's team started very brightly with Jess Hood scoring the opening goal. Ballymena equalised from a free outside the circle before half time.

Despite much pressure in the second half from Omagh on the Ballymena circle, the game ended 1-1 and penalty strokes had to decide the game.

In pouring rain, Ballymena scored the deciding stroke to reach the Shield final. The first XI now look to retain the West of Ulster league against Foyle in the final.

Meanwhile, both the second A XI won their league outright and Megan Finlay's 2B's beat Enniskillen Royal Grammar School 2-1 in their league final. The U14 A XI were runners-up in their league following one defeat to Raphoe. The U14 B's became champions of their league following wins against Omagh High School and Castlederg in a three-way final. The U13s were runners up to Cookstown High School and the U12A team were runners-up to Raphoe in the Henderson trophy

Jess Hood has made it to the next stage of the Irish U16 set up. She will play a series of matches over Easter against USA, after which the final squad will be selected.
