‘When in Rome’ for Knockmany Runners

Thursday, 13 April 2017

TWENTY-five members from Knockmany Runners Club participated in the Rome Marathon recently, where they ran through the Roman streets taking in many ancient sites.

The group took part in a demanding 12-week training programme in order to prepare for the 26.2 miles, under the expert guidance of club coach, Conor McCarroll. On the day despite challenging conditions including many miles of cobbled streets, thunderstorms and torrential rain everyone completed the course with a lot of members doing a marathon for the first time and many personal best times achieved.

The group travelled to Rome for three nights accompanied by supporters. After the marathon members took the opportunity to relax and enjoy tourist attractions such as the Colosseum, Vatican City, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.

Two members, Colin Grimes and Joe McCarroll, running their first marathon, raised over £1,600 for Friends of the Cancer Centre. All donations are much appreciated on just giving page

Closer to home, it was a very busy weekend for the club with over 20 members completing the Omagh Half Marathon and 5k courses, with a lot of members running their first half marathon or achieving personal best times.
