Popular mile relay returns to Carrickmore

HUNDREDS of runners descended on Carrickmore on Friday night for Carmen Runners Road Relay Championship.

In its third year, the event has grown in popularity with 57 teams participating in hope of claiming one of the sought after titles.

With proceedings kicking off from Carrickmore Youth Centre, the runners then had to endure the climb of Malabhui before they could appreciate a welcoming descent to complete the one mile lap.

There was a large field of quality runners but it was the talented Derry City Track Club who were the overall winners for the third year running, recording a brilliant finishing time of 18:54 with Acorns AC following closely in second with an fantastic result of 19:42. There was top class running from both teams, with member Conan McCaughey of DCT and Acorns' Darrell McKee both recording the fastest mile in an outstanding 4:40.

Derry City Track also snatched up the 'Fastest Female Team' in an excellent time of 23:31 and the 'Fastest Mixed Team' was rewarded to Enniskillen Running Club for the second year in an impressive 21:58.

Derry City Track were also successful in the Masters category completing the route collectively in 22:22.

The 'Fastest Males Sports Team' on the night went to a very strong Eire-Ogs (22:13) team who have sustained this title for a third year. The 'Fastest Business Team' title was rewarded to local business Brendan Loughran & Sons with an impressive result of 22:15.

In the 'Friends' category, it was the Moneyglass team who claimed the top prize recording a time of 22:31, and the 'Fastest Family' on the night was the Travers clan who completed the four mile course in a speedy 22:53.

Carmen Runners would like to thank all running clubs that came to support the event especially to those who travelled some distance; Derry City Track, Acorns A.C., Keep 'er Lit, Sperrin Harriers, Enniskillen Running Club, Springwell, Moneyglass Runners, Knockmany Runners, Galbally Runners, Rock Runners and Pomeroy Runners.

A club spokesperson said: "Sincere thanks to all the local sport clubs and business' who also gathered together teams for the race. The club would like to say a massive thank you to the residents and business' of Carrickmore for their co-operation in facilitating the run and to An Charraig Mhor Naomh Colmcille, Carrickmore Boxing Club and Termon Wheelers for offering their assistance in marshalling the roads so efficiently.
