ANTHONY McGale secured Captain Gary Groogan's Prize at Omagh Golf Club and the first club major of the year.

Anthony chipped in with an excellent 67 at the last hole to win from Michael Meenagh, Brian McCullagh, Tommy Doran and Kevin Miley who were all one shot back on 68. Peter Torney began his school holidays in style, taking the Gross Prize with 75.

Anthony also became the first Friday player to win this prestigious event and he had to contend with blustery conditions and a number of tricky pin positions to do so.

Saturday saw more settled conditions and fine scoring but the Friday leader in the clubhouse saw all the challenges come up short and, at a packed Captain's Celebrations, Anthony was presented with the 2017 Prize.  All in all, it was a great weekend for Anthony, having also attended his son's graduation - a weekend to remember.

And it was also a weekend to remember for Captain, Gary Groogan, wife, Helen, and family with a wonderful night of celebration in the club, beginning with a presentation of a cheque for £3,100 from the members of Omagh Golf Club to Jim MacLaine, representing Marie Curie.

"This is the 35th year of Marie Curie at Omagh Golf Club and every year, without fail, the wonderful caring members have supplied all prizes and made donations.  Thank you, once again, to everyone," said a spokesperson.

"Captain Gary, family, guests and members enjoyed a great meal, thanks to caterer Lorna Duffy and her band of assistants.  The Captain, in his address, welcomed everyone and paid tribute to all who had contributed to a very enjoyable year and a wonderful Captain's Weekend, especially his wife, Helen, and to add to the occasion, Gary's daughter, Claire, celebrated her 21st birthday in style."
