THE 2017 Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup kicked off at venues in and around Derry on Monday evening, with a number of local teams taking part in this year's competition.

Youth teams from Mountjoy United, Dergview and Ballinamallard United are among the 340 teams entered this year in the six day extravaganza of football that will witness a record 1,357 matches being played across more than 30 different venues in Counties Derry, Donegal and Tyrone this week.

Teams have travelled from all over the world to participate in this huge international youth soccer tournament. The tournament also continues to support the development of Ladies football with no fewer than 28 female teams entered in this week long event.

Monday's standout fixture was the evening clash of Dergview U19s and English Championship side Norwich City, with the Castldederg lads narrowly beaten 1-0.

Now in its 25th year, the Foyle Cup began as a one day, eight team event and has blossomed into one of the most highly respected and biggest tournaments in the British Isles.

Competition chairman, Michael Hutton, added, " There can be no doubt the respect that the Foyle Cup has gained over the years. Our economy has been in recession and yet the tournament continues to grow and prosper.

"This year we have 340 teams competing, which will be our highest entry. The entry level in terms of the number of teams competing has doubled in the last four years."
