THE 2017 Tyrone Senior Open concluded in perfect weather conditions on Sunday night after another successful tournament at Omagh Lawn Tennis Club.
Players from around Ulster and even as far as Limerick competed for titles over the week, with the standard of play throughout being very high.
It was another very successful tournament for many local Omagh players. Mary Cuthbertson completed a treble of singles titles this year and a double of Tyrone titles by claiming the B ladies singles and B mixed doubles.
The final of the B ladies singles was a close run affair with Cuthbertson narrowly defeating Omagh's Frances Taggart 10-7 in the deciding tie break. However Taggart bounced back extremely well in the ladies doubles final. She partnered Joanne Daly in defeating Cuthbertson and Vanessa McBrien in straight sets.
Cuthbertson and Donegal's Drew Chambers managed to win the B mixed doubles title by beating Bangor's David Mercer and Enniskillen's Sonja Hateboer in another close encounter. The B mixed plate was won by yet another Omagh pair, Conor McCloskey and Heather McFarland. In the B men's doubles final, the hard hitting pair of Donal Burns and Martin Fryer were beaten by juniors Oliver Guette and Conan Whitley 7/5 7/5.
Local derby
The C men's final it was a local derby with juniors, Conor Cassidy and Ronan McManus, facing off. McManus took the first set and was well down in the second set. With a championship tie break looming, McManus managed to reel off six games in a row and take the second set and the match.
The C men's doubles final was also another local affair with Omagh's Conor Fitzgerald and Irvinestown's Alan Cadden outdoing Omagh pair David Grainger and Brian McSorley in straight sets. Cadden managed another win in the mixed doubles final with fellow Irvinestown player Wendy Eaton.Grainger managed to claim the C men's plate by defeating another Omagh LTC player Kenny Hicks.
In the ladies C final Omagh's Anne Louise Hicks was defeated by Donegal junior player Ellie Browne. The day didn't get any better for Hicks as she was defeated along with another local Valerie McKinley in the C ladies doubles final.
Double winners
The Open men's singles final produced another close match between Omagh LTC coach Mark Smyth and Donegal coach Francis Venzon. Smyth claimed the first set 6/2 but Venzon managed to claim the next two sets to win another Omagh singles title. They teamed up later on by defeating Downshire coaches, Ross McCarey and Will Boyd. Smyth however got his own double by winning the A mixed doubles title with Omagh's Donna McSorley. It produced another extremely close match. It all came down to a deciding tie break in the last set with McSorley and Smyth narrowly squeaking past Andy Moore and Limerick's Lena O'Connor.
There was no end to the double winners as Lucy Octave claimed the Open ladies singles title and the ladies doubles title. Octave defeated Amy Rothwell in the singles final comfortably. The ladies open doubles final was a closer run affair but Rothwell and Enniskillen's Sarah Cousins were defeated 7/6 6/3 by Octave and Kerri Russell.
At the presentation, tournament organiser Mark Smyth and club president Billy Pollock thanked all the players who competed in the tournament as well as the main sponsors McAleer & Jackson accountants, McBrides' Spar and other contributors to the tournament. They thanked all the volunteers who had contributed their time and effort throughout the week and hoped to see all players return again next year.
