McColgan clinches 2017 Tour of Omagh thumbnailAlice Sharpe, Phoenix CC, rides to victory ahead of Claire McIlwaine, Phoenix CC, and Katharine Smyth, Team Madigan, on day one of the 2017 Tour of Omagh.

AFTER a fast and furious weekend of racing, Peter McColgan came away as the overall winner of the A4 SPAR Tour of Omagh, with Alice Sharpe taking overall honours in the separate Women's race.

160 riders took to the start line across both races, with riders travelling from England and as far as Cork. St Tiernan's CC rider McColgan put on a dominant display across the weekend in the A4 race winning two stages, and coming second in the decisive time trial stage on Saturday morning.

Despite various attempts from other teams to challenge his lead he remained vigilant and ultimately turned the tables on the final stages going on a solo attack with seven miles to go to take an emphatic win on his own.

Colin Fox (Harps CC) took the win in the Mountains competition, whilst McColgan also won the Points competition. Island Wheelers won the team competition. Don Keohane (Bandon CC) was the 1st unplaced Master.

The Women's race proved to be the most exciting race over the weekend with plenty of aggressive racing on show. It was the strongest field in the eight years of the race, with winner Alice Sharpe (Phoenix CC) travelling from England for the race.

However, she was pushed all the way by Katharine Smyth (Team Madigan) and the duo really stamped their authority on the race. On stage three the two riders attacked and put over three minutes into the next group of cyclist.

On the final stage, it was once again the duo who forged ahead on the final Cat 1 climb of the day and stayed away to the finish with Sharpe narrowly beating Smyth for the win, whilst the next rider was almost five minutes behind on final classification.

The Points competition was also won by Sharpe whilst the team prize went to Phoenix CC. Nessa Rockford (De Ronde van Cork) was 1st unplaced Master and Orla Desmond (TC Racing) was 1st unplaced Junior.
