Crash victim 'critically ill'

A 58-year-old woman remained ‘critically ill’ in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast yesterday evening, (Tuesday), after being involved in a road traffic accident outside Omagh on Monday afternoon.

Frances Folliard was accompanied by her 24-year-old daughter, Nicola, when they were involved in a two-car collision on the A32 Omagh to Dromore Road shortly before 4pm.

It happened near the turn-off for St Mary's Church, Drumragh, in the Clanabogan area.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said two appliances from the Omagh Fire Station with firefighters were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision. A man aged about 50 was out of one vehicle on arrival of fire crews. Firefighters rescued a woman in her 20s from the second vehicle using manual handling techniques and a woman in her 50s was rescued by firefighters using hydraulic cutting equipment and a spine board.

All three casualties were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel and taken to hospital. The incident was dealt with by 5.24pm.

Ms Folliard, who originally hails from the Victoria Bridge area, had to be airlifted to the Belfast hospital from the scene by an Air Ambulance Northern Ireland helicopter, while her daughter and the male driver of the other car were both taken to the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen. Both were discharged later that night.

Road closed

The collision, which occurred about three miles from Ms Folliard's home at Clanabogan, meant the road had to be closed for forensic examination until the early hours of Tuesday and drivers in the area were forced to seek alternative routes until it opened again later that night.

Ms Folliard's former husband, Billy Scanlon, said the family didn't know much more than what they had already been told by their daughter, Nicola, and that Ms Folliard was in a critical condition.

"Frances was driving a Ford Focus on the occasion. She had collected Nicola from the Christian Brothers Grammar School where she works. After the accident the Air Ambulance took her straight from the scene to the Royal Victoria."
