Petition calls for pedestrian crossing on Omagh's Old Mountfield Road

West Tyrone SDLP MLA, Daniel McCrossan, is supporting calls for a pedestrian crossing on Old Mountfield Road near the leisure centre in Omagh.

Nearly 100 residents of Sunnycrest Gardens met with Mr McCrossan recently and want to see action taken to reduce the speed of traffic travelling along Old Mountfield Road. They reminded him that there was a road death on Old Mountfield Road in 2013. The MLA promised to support the campaign and has submitted the petition to Fermanagh and Omagh chief executive, Brendan Hegarty, on behalf of local residents.

The 400-plus pupil Gibson Primary School is just up the road, and there is no safe place to cross between the school and the junction with Gortin Road, some 0.3 miles away.

Mr McCrossan said he fully shared the residents’ road safety concerns on the Old Mountfield Road.

"As traffic and speed has increased, this has not been matched with improving road safety measures, particularly for pedestrians. We have the leisure centre on the road and with the future opening of the Strule Campus on Gortin Road, it is absolutely vital that action is taken to ensure safe pedestrian crossing."
