DESPITE a horrendous attack on their workplace on Saturday morning, the resilient management and staff at Hegarty's SuperValu shop on Tattymoyle Road, Fintona, defied the odds and reopened the business within hours to make sure the villains didn't spoil Christmas for locals.

Earlier that morning thieves used a digger to steal an ATM from the wall outside the shop at approximately 3am, causing extensive damage to the building around. It was a lightening raid and one that had all the hallmarks of an organised gang.

Detectives believe the digger was stolen from a building site a short distance away and was set alight at the scene immediately after the theft.

Yesterday, (Wednesday), the PSNI confirmed that enquiries were ongoing and renewed their appeal for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious around that area to get in touch with them as soon as possible. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have noticed a silver coloured BMW in the Fintona area at the time. The vehicle may have been towing a trailer.

There was a sense of disbelief and shock throughout the village on Saturday, as local people came to terms with the scale and the audacity of the robbery.
