PREPARATIONS for the new hockey season is already underway for Derg Valley Ladies Hockey Club. Training has commenced at the Sports Pavilion, Castlederg High School, on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9pm and everyone is welcome.
Last season saw success for the club, with the first team finishing mid-table and the newly-formed second team being crowned Junior 8B League Winners, in what was a challenging year.
With many of the original first team heading to pastures new, the club worked hard and recruited new players and were able to enter two teams in the Ulster Hockey Senior Ladies League.
The first 11 remained in Junior 6 for the season, with the second 11 competing in Junior 8B.
Funding from eight local businesses enabled the club to purchase new kits. These sponsors were Linton & Robinson Environmental Ltd, Lowry Building and Civil Engineering, Lyons Bros, Pedro, The Castle Inn, The Derg Arms, The Pet Store and West Star Welding.
Derg Valley Ladies would like to express their thanks and appreciation to these organisations for their support. They would also like to thank The Derg Arms for their post-matches hospitality and all those businesses who sponsored their calendar. This season will again be a challenging one as the first team retake their place in senior three, whilst the seconds will play in Junior 8.
“Anyone who is interested in either taking up hockey for the first time (provided they are over 15 year of age), or who would like to return to the sport are more than welcome to join the training on Monday evenings,” a spokesperson said.
She continued: “We have a great bunch of girls who get on well and support each other at training and Saturday fixtures. There is great comradery within the club and everyone is made to feel most welcome.”
The club’s annual general meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 26, at 7.30pm in the upstairs room, The Castle Inn, Castlederg and everyone is welcome to attend. If you would like any more information, please contact Diane on 07727689832.

The first match for Derg Valley Ladies seconds is on September 29 at home to Owls thirds.
No time has been confirmed yet but all matches must take place between 1pm and 4pm – unless otherwise agreed with Ulster Hockey.
