THE Townhall in Enniskillen recently came alive with celebration as the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council hosted a special reception marking the 90th anniversary of the Drumharvey Pipe Band. Formed in 1934 and proudly based in Irvinestown, the band has been a cornerstone of musical tradition and community life for nearly a century.

Council chairperson, Cllr John McClaughry, warmly welcomed guests to the event, highlighting the remarkable journey of Drumharvey Pipe Band over the past 90 years. The band has built a proud legacy, participating in parades and events across the province and hosting numerous fundraisers to support its continued success.

“Drumharvey Pipe Band was established in 1934 and over the last 90 years, it has gone from strength to strength. Every year the band participates in a wide variety of parades and events throughout the province, as well as your own events to raise funds for the band. ”

He added the band also plays a very important role within the community of Irvinestown.

A highlight of their year was their memorable participation in the Lady of the Lake Festival, where they not only led the parade but embraced the festive spirit by dressing as clowns, bringing joy and colour to the community. They also continued their strong presence at key local events, including the Remembrance Sunday Parade and the Christmas Lights switch-on in Irvinestown.

Fittingly, during this milestone anniversary year, the County Fermanagh Twelfth of July demonstration was hosted in Irvinestown. Drumharvey Pipe Band proudly marched through the streets with their new 90th anniversary banner, receiving a warm and celebratory welcome from the crowd.

The day was made even more special with a service of dedication for nine new pipes, a bog drum, and new uniforms, acquired through a combination of grant funding and the band’s dedicated fundraising efforts. Earlier that morning, members of the band had the honour of meeting the Secretary of State, Hillary Benn, alongside the council chairperson.

The event underscored the vital role marching bands play in preserving Fermanagh’s rich cultural heritage. The contribution of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association was also acknowledged for its ongoing support in nurturing piping and drumming in the region.

Being part of Drumharvey Pipe Band has long been about more than just music, it’s about community, pride, and preserving a treasured tradition for future generations. The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting bands like Drumharvey as part of its mission to protect and enhance the area’s cultural heritage.

As the evening closed, heartfelt congratulations and best wishes were extended to all past and present members of Drumharvey Pipe Band. Their dedication, talent, and pride in their uniform continue to inspire, and the legacy of this beloved band looks set to thrive for many years to come.
