Pauraic returns to win JJ's competition

FINTONA Golf Club have had a busy ten days of competitions ending with the prestigious JJ Donnelly and Sons competition on Saturday, August 16.

John has been sponsoring this competition for a long time and it remains one of best supported competitions of the calendar.

Pauraic McNelis has been away from golf for some time but has returned this year and he obviously hasn't lost his touch. As they say, form is temporary, class is permanent.

He had four points to spare over a chasing group of four players.

Results: 1st; Pauraic McNelis 42 pts, 2nd; Peter McGinn 38 pts, 3rd; Paul Ward 38 pts, 4th; Mark Welsh 38 pts, 5th; Brian Maguire 38 pts, Gross; Jason Gibson 75, Seniors; John Kelly 37 pts, First Nine; Daniel McGinn 22 pts, Second Nine; Eamonn McNelis 21 pts.

A club spokesperson said: "Many thanks to JJ Donnelly for his continuing support.

"The presentation took place on Saturday evening and the photo will be in next week."

There was a good turn out for the AnneMarie Kelly sponsored BBQ Cup on Friday evening.

"Again, this competition started many years ago. It's great to still have these sponsors who have stood by us over the years," the spokesperson added.

It was very competitive with William and Amanda Moffit well clear of the field with anett 63.

Seamus and Margaret Mullan came in second with 66 nett, while Michael and lady president Kate McGoldrick were third on 68 nett.

The club added: "Many thanks to Anne Marie for her support."

The Car Sales NI competition was played on Wednesday, August 13 and it again was a stroke competition.

Pat Donnelly emerged as the winner with a fine nett 66, giving him a two shot advantage over the field.

Results: 1; Pat Donnelly 66 nett, Section 0-9; Aaron Shortt 72 nett, Section 10-19; Sean Travers 68 nett, Section 20+; Ivan Short 68 nett, Best Gross; Niall Teague 68, Seniors; Brian Maguire 71 nett, First Nine; Mark McMahon 32 nett; Second Nine; Jonathan Kuruc 33 net.

"We are very grateful to Car Sales N I (Omagh) for supporting the club," the club spokesperson said.

The Ella Kavanagh Trophyfundraising competition was played over the weekend August 9 and 10, sponsored by John Kavanagh.

John was pleased with the outcome and the support he received from members. It was a battle between club president Declan O'Hagan and his grandson Turlough for the top spot.

Declan won on this occasion, beating Turlough on count back, both on 42 points.

Results: 1; Declan O'Hagan 42 pts, 2nd; Turlough O'Hagan 42 pts, 3rd; Arnold Jobb 41 pts, Gross; Niall Teague 73, Seniors; Andrew Montague 40 pts.

The ladies also played earlier in the week and Therese Mullan won with 37 pts. Anne Marie Kelly was second with 36 pts, while the nines were won by Karen Burns and Claire Sweeney with 20 and 18 points respectively.

The spokesperson said: "Thanks again to John for sponsoring this competition."

The McElholm & Co Accountants sponsored competition was played on August 6.

This competition was started many years ago by the late TBF McElhom who was a past captain of the club.

The competition was won by Jim Crozier with 39 points, It's been a while since Jim has been in the winner's enclosure and he was hotly pursued by the two Marks, Donnelly and Welsh.

Mark Welsh has popped up a few times recently in the prizes.
