THE Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed to the council the presence of blue green algae in the water in Muckross Bay, Kesh, as well as Lower Lough Erne in the vicinity of Castle Archdale; Carrickduff, Upper Lough MacNean; and Shoreline Rushin House, Upper Lough MacNean, Belcoo.
The council owns small sections of land at Muckross and Upper Lough MacNean, however, due to the nature of blue green algae, it is not possible to confirm if it is on council land.
A spokesperson from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council said: "The council supports NIEA through the erection of signage and awareness raising on social media to advise of the potential presence and the precautions people should take.
"Blue green algae can bloom very quickly, therefore, the council would advise visitors and residents to be aware of the potential presence of blue green algae and to exercise caution around waterways and shorelines during periods of warm weather, particularly from the months of April to September due to the potential risk to the health of humans and animals.
"It is recommended that if you suspect there to be a presence you avoid contact with the water and the adjacent shoreline and report the issue to NIEA through the NIEA Bloomin’ algae app which is available to download for free or the Environmental Health Service."
