DCI John Caldwell has been praised for his "service and bravery" by Northern Ireland's Shadow Secretary, Peter Kyle MP.

Mr Kyle was visiting Northern Ireland, where he has met with Chief Constable Simon Byrne.

He shared a photograph of Mr Caldwell, who was shot at a sports centre in Omagh in February, which left him fighting for his life in hospital for several months.

The MP said: "Just met up with DCI John Caldwell, his wife Jacqueline and son Jack. On behalf of Keir Starmar and Labour, I expressed our deep gratitude for his service and bravery.

"This kind and loving family deserve swift justice for the attempted murder that almost shattered their lives."

DCI Caldwell has made several public appearances since the shooting, which took place in front of his son while he loaded footballs into the boot of a car.

A number of months ago, he met Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, at a special event at the Duchess of Abercorn's Veterans' Garden Project at Baronscourt Estate.

He previously appeared at a visit by the King and Queen at Hillsborough Castle in May.
