CHARLIE'S Bar in Omagh is celebrating its 150th anniversary this coming Saturday, November 2 - quite the milestone!
Nestled in Campsie, McAleer's Bar, affectionately known as Charlie's, is an iconic spot with a deep history - 150 years of stories, locals, and visitors all gathering for a pint or a wee dram.
It was established in 1874 by Peter McAleer and it is believed to be the oldest pub in Omagh. McAleer dedicated the bar "to those merry souls who make drinking a pleasure".
Initially limited to whiskey and plain stout, the bar evolved to include a shipping agency by 1912 helping migrants secure passage across the Atlantic.
Charlie, Peter's adventurous son, returned from Canada in the 1930s to help run the bar and famously introduced ice to drinks in the bar despite initial resistance.
Eugene Boyle, Charlie's nephew, joined the staff in 1952, fostering a welcoming atmosphere that transcended social divides, even during the Troubles.
After enduring several bomb attacks and many floods, McAleer's continues to thrive and eventually transitioned into new ownership after being acquired by the Scott and Ewing group in 2005, but the name 'Charlie's' endures in local affection to this day.
It’s a testament to the area's rich pub culture and customers old and new are expected to visit the venue this coming Saturday, November 2 to participate and enjoy the 150th celebrations.
A 150-year legacy like this is a rare gem, capturing the spirit of Campsie and serving as a community pillar through generations. Whether it's sharing old stories, laughter, or a taste of tradition with a perfectly poured pint, Charlie's represents a slice of Omagh's history.
Cheers to Charlie's Bar, and here’s to many more years of good company, good stories, and, of course, the finest stuff!
