THIS winter, Beyond the Call Project, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, is inviting older adults to stay cozy and connected with Knit Through the Nippy Days, a special knitting project designed to bring warmth and companionship during the colder months.

This seasonal initiative provides a fun and creative outlet for seniors to knit, making the most of winter’s chill while sharing in the joys of crafting.

Knit Through the Nippy Days offers participants the opportunity to knit much needed hats and blankets for the neo-natal and maternity wards in South West Acute Hospital (SWAH) and Altnagelvin Hospital.

This project is the perfect way to stay active, engage in a beloved pastime, and give back to the community during the winter months.

Health benefits

Knitting is not only relaxing but has been shown to reduce stress and improve motor skills, making it a great winter activity for older adults.

“We know winter can be a tough time for many seniors, especially when it comes to staying active and connected with others,” says Geraldine Keys, manager of Beyond the Call Project.

“Knit Through the Nippy Days is a way to turn the winter chill into a season of creativity for the community.”

Beyond the Call Project is committed to enhancing the lives of older adults through engaging activities that promote creativity, social connection and well-being.

"Our initiatives aim to support seniors in staying active, connected, and empowered throughout all seasons of life," Geraldine added.
