THE Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area is set to reap significant benefits from a €6 million funding package announced by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, aimed at developing Sliabh Beagh into a premier eco-tourism destination. The investment, part of a €23 million allocation from the Shared Island Fund, will enhance tourism infrastructure and create new opportunities for local businesses and communities.
Announcing the funding, Taoiseach Micheál Martin emphasised the role of sustainable tourism in fostering cross-border cooperation and economic growth. “We are investing in new amenities and promotion of the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark and the Sliabh Beagh region, so that more people from home and abroad will visit and enjoy these spectacular destinations that straddle the border. The funding for Sliabh Beagh will enable the development of extensive connected walking, cycling, and equestrian cross-border trails, alongside trailheads, public art, and wayfinding infrastructure. This investment will significantly enhance the region’s tourism appeal, attracting visitors, increasing their length of stay, and boosting local economies.”
The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, a key partner in the Sliabh Beagh development, has long recognised the region’s natural and cultural assets. Its chairperson, Councillor John McClaughry welcomed the funding, highlighting the commitment of local authorities to cross-border collaboration.
“Sliabh Beagh is a special landscape with immense potential. Our partnership with Monaghan and Mid-Ulster District Councils through the Sliabh Beagh Partnership Committee has been instrumental in advancing shared tourism initiatives. This funding will bring direct benefits to local communities, businesses, and visitors, strengthening the region’s appeal as a top-tier eco-tourism destination.”
Councillor Sheamus Greene, chairperson of the Sliabh Beagh Partnership, echoed these sentiments, stating that the investment represents a transformative moment for the region.
“The €6 million allocation is a game-changer for Sliabh Beagh. The development of trails, wayfinding, and visitor amenities will enhance the area’s attractiveness, increase tourism footfall, and boost local spending. This investment not only supports sustainable tourism but also provides long-term economic and employment opportunities for the local community.”
The funding will support the creation of an interconnected network of trails and amenities designed to maximise the natural beauty of Sliabh Beagh while preserving its ecological integrity. The project aligns with broader tourism strategies aimed at increasing visitor numbers and extending their stays, ultimately driving greater economic benefits for Fermanagh and Omagh businesses.
Paul Keeley, director of Regional Development at Fáilte Ireland, welcomed the investment, acknowledging its role in unlocking the untapped tourism potential of the border region.
“This investment will sustainably strengthen the tourism offering in the area, making it more attractive for visitors and delivering tangible economic and employment benefits to local communities.”
With work set to commence on the development of these new tourism assets, the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area is poised to become a hub for sustainable tourism, drawing visitors and investment while preserving its rich cultural and natural heritage.
