FROM the fields of rural Fermanagh to a life of service in Killyclogher, Omagh, retired nurse tutor Jimmy Carrigan has gathered a lifetime of memories into his new book, Gettin’ Past the Gander.
With warmth, wit, and a storyteller’s gift for detail, Jimmy takes readers back to a childhood shaped by the rhythms of farm life, the challenges of growing up in simpler times, and the bonds of family and community that carried people through.
From daring donkeys and mischievous schooldays to the perils of young romance, lively characters, and even a sprinkle of his own comic poetry, this memoir is filled with moments to make you laugh, nod in recognition, and maybe even shed a tear.
At its heart, Jimmy’s book is a celebration of resilience, belonging, and the power of stories to connect us across generations. It’s a tribute not only to his own journey - from farm boy to almost-priest, and eventually to his true vocation as a psychiatric nurse - but also to the rich culture of Fermanagh and Tyrone, where music, ceilidhs, and neighbourly kindness were never in short supply, even when money was.
The launch of Gettin’ Past the Gander takes place on Friday, September 26 at 8pm in Omagh Golf Club. The evening promises to be a special community celebration, with guest speaker Declan Forde, music and entertainment, and light refreshments. In true Jimmy fashion, all profits after expenses will be donated to charity.
Come along, share in the laughter and memories, and help celebrate the launch of this charming memoir from one of Killyclogher’s most cherished voices.
