TOURISM and heritage received a major boost this week with the launch of brand-new Heritage Maps and improved access to one of the area’s most iconic landmarks, Newtownstewart Castle.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, warmly welcomed the initiatives, which he described as “a celebration of the district’s remarkable history and a fresh invitation for people to explore it.”

The newly launched Heritage Maps highlight the fascinating architecture, stories, and culture of Newtownstewart and Sion Mills, offering both locals and visitors a handy guide to uncovering hidden treasures on their doorstep.

In a further positive step, public access to Newtownstewart Castle is being significantly improved thanks to a new key-holding partnership between the Department for Communities’ Historic Environment Division and two dedicated community organisations - Two Castles and Newtownstewart 2000 Centre. The arrangement means more flexible visiting opportunities at the castle, giving people the chance to connect with the site’s history like never before.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor McHugh said: “Our historic towns are the heart of this District’s story, and it is vital that we continue to celebrate, protect, and promote them. These new Heritage Maps will open up the rich stories of Newtownstewart and Sion Mills, while the new key-holding agreement ensures that the community can play an even bigger role in welcoming visitors to Newtownstewart Castle.

“These projects are not just about preserving heritage - they’re about creating opportunities, driving tourism, and supporting the local economy. By making history more accessible, we’re inviting people to stay longer, discover more, and truly appreciate the unique character of our towns.”

The initiatives build on the momentum of the Newtownstewart Town Centre Regeneration Framework launched earlier this year, signalling ongoing investment in the heritage-led regeneration of the district.

A spokesperson for the Department for Communities added: “We’re delighted to support these projects and to work with local community groups who are passionate about sharing the richness of their area’s heritage. The new key-holding arrangement means that more people will have the chance to experience Newtownstewart Castle firsthand.”

Heritage Maps are available both online at www.derrystrabane.com/heritageprojects and in local venues and businesses. Visitors can enjoy Newtownstewart Castle daily from 10am to 7pm (April to September) and 10am to 4pm (October to March).
