Safety improvements secured for dangerous Carrickmore junction

HAVING lobbied for urgent safety measures at the Whitebridge Road/Tirooney Road junction near Carrickmore, where concerns had been mounting over the risk of a serious accident, Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has welcomed confirmation that improvements have now been programmed.

The West Tyrone MLA said: "I have been actively lobbying for improvements to the Whitebridge Road/Tirooney Road junction near Carrickmore, which has long been viewed by local residents and road users as a dangerous spot where an accident is waiting to happen.

''Following my representations, I welcome confirmation that officials carried out an inspection of the junction on Thursday, September 25. As a result, a number of important safety measures have now been programmed.

''Two new single-bar chevrons will be erected on either side of Whitebridge Road, approaching from Carrickmore, to warn drivers of the sharp right turn. The existing large directional sign will also be cleaned and re-sited to ensure it is more visible and effective.

''On the approach from Sixmilecross, a new double bar chevron will be installed to highlight the sharp left turn. In addition, while large map signs are already in place on both sides of the junction to provide advance warning, further action is being taken regarding the road surface itself.

''It was confirmed during inspection that the road markings at the junction are significantly faded. Crucially, there is a designated right-turning lane from Sixmilecross into Whitebridge Road, but it is barely visible. I’ve been assured this issue has now been referred to the road markings contractor, with a view to having the markings refreshed as soon as possible.

"This progress follows local pressure for improvements, and I will continue to monitor the situation and push for any further work needed to make this junction safer for everyone."
