COOKSTOWN'S Carol Doey was named 'Local Hero of the Year' at the Pride of Tyrone Awards.

Carol, who is a prominent figure in the Cookstown community, founded The Hub BT80, a community centre focused on promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Carol played a key role in transforming an old building into a welcoming, inclusive space that offers a wide range of programmes and activities for people of all ages.

Carol also founded The Hub Ramblers, hiring a minibus with her husband Tony to encourage local people to get out and explore together, and The Hub Choir, an all-inclusive group that performs regularly at community events.

The Tyrone woman isĀ also a playwright, author and community arts practitioner whose work celebrates working-class women and local history.

A citation alongside her nomination read: "Her commitment to creativity, inclusion and wellbeing has made both her and The Hub a vital part of the community."

The award was sponsored by AMD Construction and AFT Wholesale and presented by Lynn Coote.
