Major boost for Omagh as plans lodged to transform former Poundland unit

PLANS have been submitted that could deliver a significant boost to Omagh town centre, with proposals to transform the former Poundland store into new function rooms and a business centre.

The vacant unit, located within the Main Street Shopping Complex, has been empty since the Poundland store closed last August. Its owner, local businessman Michael McElroy, has now applied for planning permission to bring the building back into active use as a multipurpose facility aimed at supporting business, tourism and community events.

Under the proposals, the new function rooms will be linked to the adjacent Rooms at RUE, the accommodation development operating on the site of the former Royal Arms Hotel. The historic hotel, which served the town for more than 200 years, closed its doors in 1999.

A planning statement submitted with the application confirms that all works will be carried out internally, with no significant changes proposed to the building’s external appearance.

“The proposal seeks permission for a change of use from the former Poundland retail premises to new multipurpose function rooms and a business centre,” the statement explains.

“The proposed facilities will operate as part of a cohesive overall development with Rooms at RUE, which currently provides 13 bedrooms, with a further 10 new bedrooms due to come on stream in Spring 2026.”

The statement highlights that the development will create flexible spaces capable of hosting a wide range of events and activities, while making efficient use of an existing vacant town-centre property.

By retaining the building’s external structure, the proposal aims to preserve the architectural integrity of the site and ensure full compatibility with its surroundings, including the nearby conservation area.

The development is also expected to contribute positively to the wider regeneration of Omagh town centre.

“The central and accessible location encourages linked trips, increased visitor dwell time and positive economic spillover to nearby businesses,” the statement adds.

If approved, the project would bring new life to a prominent vacant unit, support tourism and hospitality growth, and further strengthen Omagh’s role as a vibrant town-centre destination
