Magik Moments marks a new chapter as founder prepares for well-earned retirement

AFTER more than three decades of creativity, craftsmanship and community connection, Omagh entrepreneur Derek Breslin is preparing to step back from the business he built from the ground up - but he hopes Magik Moments UK’s story is far from over.

Derek, who turned 70 in January, has announced plans to retire at the end of March after 30 successful years at the helm of Magik Moments UK. Rather than closing the doors, however, he is keen to see the thriving business passed on to a new owner who can continue its work, safeguard local jobs and build on its strong foundations.

“I will be sad to go,” Derek admits. “I’ve worked all my life. When I left school, I had a job within ten days. Even when I came back from England, I was only out of work for a fortnight. My father always encouraged me to create my own job - and that’s exactly what I did.”

Like many great local success stories, Magik Moments began almost by accident. While running door-to-door selling kitchen roll, Derek found himself in a stationery shop on Sedan Avenue searching for invoice books when he noticed a laminated colour print.

“I asked about it and was directed to a woman in the market who was producing them,” he recalls. “She had a colour photocopier, and I immediately thought, ‘What a great idea.’”

That moment sparked a journey which would define the next three decades of his life. After learning about early garment-printing technology from a Scottish company called The Magic Touch, Derek invested in equipment, visited trade shows and steadily expanded his offering as customer demand grew.

Originally working from home, the business moved through several Omagh locations - from Sedan Avenue to Campsie - before settling at its current base in Unit 6b, Gortrush Industrial Estate, around 17 years ago. As orders increased, so too did the premises and the product range.

Derek’s working life began far from embroidery and printing. He started out as a motor mechanic before moving into heavy plant machinery - a job he describes as “big, dirty work” that eventually took its toll.

“When this opportunity came along, it just felt right,” he says. “Thirty years later, I’m still going strong and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Today, Magik Moments UK is a well-established, respected name in personalised garments and gifts, serving customers across Northern Ireland, the UK and Ireland.

The company offers an extensive range of services including embroidery, garment printing, workwear, corporate clothing, schoolwear, sportswear, hi-visibility and waterproof clothing, as well as personalised gifts such as mugs, hats, candles and accessories.

“We do everything from one-off birthday t-shirts and hen party tops to full workwear packages,” Derek explains. “We even print memorial candles for people remembering loved ones. Embroidery is now the mainstay of the business, and we’ve built a loyal clientele who’ve stayed with us for years.”

That loyalty, Derek believes, comes down to relationships.

“A good personal relationship with customers is the secret. We’ve always treated people fairly and made sure everyone wins.”

Magik Moments currently employs five skilled staff, all of whom Derek is keen to see retained under new ownership.

“This is a very good concern,” he says. “We’re busy all the time, with repeat customers and new ones coming in regularly - including some high-profile clients. In real terms, the business works.”

Over the years, Magik Moments UK has worked with organisations such as BOC, Coca-Cola and the production of Mrs Brown’s Boys, alongside countless local businesses, schools, tradespeople and community groups. The company is also a proud member of the Federation of Small Businesses.

With demand steady and infrastructure already in place, Derek believes Magik Moments UK presents an exciting opportunity for someone seeking a new challenge.

“If the business isn’t sold, I’ll have to close and sell the assets but I would much rather see it passed on as a going concern,” he says. “There’s a diverse range of work here that should appeal to investors of all kinds.”

As retirement approaches, Derek admits the decision hasn’t been easy.

“I’m reluctant, but I think the time is right. I’d like to enjoy my retirement knowing the business - and the people who work here - are in good hands.”

For the right buyer, Magik Moments UK offers a rare chance to take over a trusted, profitable business with a strong reputation, established customers and an experienced workforce ready to continue delivering quality, creativity and care.
