FAMILIES in Castlederg are being warned of growing safety concerns after a spike in vandalism and anti-social behaviour at the town’s popular Castle Park Playpark.
Derry City and Strabane District Council has issued a public appeal following weeks of repeated damage at the facility, including smashed glass and debris strewn across the play area - hazards that pose a serious risk of injury to children and families.
Council workers have been forced to carry out regular clean-ups to make the area safe, diverting resources from other frontline services.
A council spokesperson described the situation as “deeply disappointing,” warning that continued vandalism is undermining years of investment in the area.
“The Castle Park playpark is an important part of the wider regeneration of Castlederg, which has seen significant improvement following major investment through the Derg Active Project,” the spokesperson said. “The park was created to enhance health, leisure and wellbeing for the entire community. To see it treated with such disregard is disheartening.”
The playpark has been widely regarded as a cornerstone of efforts to revitalise the town, providing a safe and welcoming space for families. However, officials say ongoing anti-social behaviour is not only putting park users at risk but also hitting ratepayers in the pocket.
“Every clean-up generates a cost to the council and ultimately to the ratepayer,” the spokesperson added. “That money could be better spent on essential maintenance and other vital services across the district.”
The council is urging members of the public to take responsibility and report any incidents of anti-social behaviour directly to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
As frustration mounts, local families are being asked to remain vigilant and help protect what many see as one of Castlederg’s most valuable community assets.
