FIVEMILETOWN College marked a remarkable milestone on Saturday, February 21 as past and present members of the school community gathered in The Valley Hotel for the Blue Sapphire Ball, a special celebration recognising 65 years of the school’s history.
Guests were welcomed into a vibrant atmosphere where decades of memories were brought to life through an impressive display of school memorabilia. Exhibits ranged from the original handwritten registers dating back to 1960 to more recent photographs showcasing current staff and pupils. The collection offered a vivid journey through time, sparking conversation, nostalgia, and pride among attendees.
The evening formally opened with an address from Mrs Janice Allen, Principal of Fivemiletown College, who spoke warmly about the school’s heritage and its enduring role at the heart of the community. Her remarks concluded with a specially prepared video presentation, capturing the spirit, achievements, and values that continue to shape the college today.
The keynote speech was delivered by Mrs Beverley Weir, whose long and distinguished association with the school - as pupil, teacher, vice-principal, and parent - gave her a uniquely personal perspective. She reflected fondly on the many changes witnessed over the decades and the lasting relationships forged within its walls. Her address was met with enthusiastic applause and evident appreciation.
Bringing the evening to a close was Mr Iain Lendrum, chairman of the Board of Governors and former pupil, who spoke of the bright future ahead for the college, grounded in strong governance, community support, and a proud legacy.
One of the evening’s most notable features was the presence of Head Boys and Head Girls from across the decades, 27 in total, each representing their era and adding to the sense of continuity and shared celebration. Their attendance highlighted the lasting connection so many former pupils continue to feel toward the school.
The Blue Sapphire Ball proved to be a resounding success - an evening of reminiscing, reconnecting, and celebrating the school’s past while looking forward with optimism. As guests departed, there was a clear sense that the spirit of Fivemiletown College remains as strong today as it was 65 years ago.
