Mountjoy Juniors enjoy long awaited homecoming

MOUNTJOY Juniors' annual Mini Soccer and Youth Football Programme commenced last month but with an added air of excitement as the opening session took place at their spiritual home at Lisnagirr Road.

For the very first time, the youngsters - ranging from primary one up to U18 - set foot on the newly constructed 3G pitch which sits adjacent to the club's grass pitch that many have become familiar with over the past 30 years.

Anyone who regularly travels along the A5 road between Omagh and Newtownstewart could not have failed to see the ongoing construction works taking place over the past 18 months which finally reached completion in the middle of September.

"While our senior teams have had the privilege to play their matches at our Lisnagirr Road venue, our juniors have not been so fortunate - mostly due to the sheer number of members and teams that our fantastic youth setup has maintained over the years," a club spokesperson said.

"This facility now means that all our members, young and old, can train and play their home matches exactly where the word suggests - home."

"Our juniors have always been largely dependent on alternative venues for their activities but, while we thank Omagh Leisure Centre and Youth Sport Omagh for their support and hospitality over the years, the time has finally come where we can become largely self sufficient in terms of providing a state of the art facility for our members to train and play on."

The new pitch will also be an an added feature to the existing facilities at Mountjoy United Football Club which has been making great strides to run the site as a hub for the local and wider communities of Mountjoy and the surrounding areas.

The clubhouse and pitch are available for a wide range of events including group meetings, seminars/training courses indoors as well as casual and block bookings on the 3G pitch.
